Regular monitoring of AWS expenditure is essential to reach your organization’s desired saving goals. To help you reach those goals, Cloud Conformity supports 2 budget rules. You have access to these rules through the Cost Optimisation add-on offered by Cloud Conformity.

Set a Budget (defined as a $ amount) for your cloud account and receive notifications whenever the expenditures exceed the budgeted amount. You can define budgets for various parameters such as services, environment, roles and tags, and also for the combination of any of these together. Budget alert notifications, which are dependent on the risk level that you choose and communication channels, will be sent when the current month spend exceeds the specified budget limit.

View check for Budget rules

Once you add budget, budget rules behave like any other Rule on the Cloud Conformity platform.

Filter report by Budget rules

  1. Open All Checks report
  2. Click on Filter Checks
  3. Input and select “Budgets-001 (Budget Overrun)” and “Budgets-003 (Budget Overrun Forecast)” in Rules
  4. Scroll down to the checks output where you can View by Rule
  5. Click on the rule to see which parameters that you defined while setting up a budget have failed their check against the Rule

Budget Overrun (Budgets-001)

This rule determines whether the current spend has exceeded the set budget.

Example Use case:

  1. Date: 10th of month
  2. Current spend: $10,000 for AWS Service: Lambda
  3. Budget: $25,000 for AWS Service: Lambda
  4. Result: Check on Budget Overrun rule will return a success

Budget Overrun Forecast (Budgets-003)

This rule forecasts whether the spend will exceed the set budget. The forecast is linear for on-demand services and assumes one-time fees remain static.

Example Use case:

  1. Date: 10th of month
  2. Current spend: $10,000 for AWS Service: Lambda
  3. Budget: $25,000 for AWS Service: Lambda
  4. Result: Check on Budget Overrun Forecast rule will return a failure because current spend of $10,000 at 10th day of a month is forecast to go as high as $30,000 by the end of the month. So, we forecast this budget to overrun
